how did my DVD rom turn region free?

I'm in Europe and my DVD player was set to Region 2 and could not play DVDs from other regions like USA. That was with Windows XP. Now I have installed Ubuntu on the entire harddrive and with lots of fuzz I have managed to make all things work. It's a good thing, but how did the DVD player go region-free? I used to have windows media player and VLC, but they were not region-free.

Your DVD player is not region-free. Certian programs, such as gxine, are.
