Kudos to the Intel marketing drones for making their product names extremely confusing.

I'm going by this Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GMA500#GMA_950

The GMA500 (aka Poulsbo) does *NOT* work well under Linux. While it does have a closed-source binary blob driver for Ubuntu 8.04, it does not work on later versions or other distributions. Until the situation is rectified (which, from rumors, may actually be in the near to middle future), avoid it.

That said, it is a much newer part than the GMA950, so it is faster (on paper), and also consumes less power. However, the GMA950 has completely open-source drivers, and works right now without problems or fiddling.

If you need a netbook now, go for the GMA950 (because it works, right now). If you can wait, I'd see if the GMA500 situation gets any better (this may take several months).

gma500 will be nice when Intel provides a driver for Ubuntu. Currently, neither Karmic, nor Jaunty have the required support, and the only version that works out of the box it Hardy. There are reports of a cooking driver, which hopefully will be included in the next Ubuntu release, but so far, it's been a real mess.
