Exclamation Want to build an Ubuntu compaitble i7 PC - help required

Hi guys. Okay, I want to build a socket 1156 Intel i7 PC, and I have a budget of £450-500. I want to know, preferably from like minded people, which components & chipsets are tried and tested with Ubuntu, from a minimum OS of 10.04.

I know ATI cards are to be avoided like the plague, as they don't play fair with GNU/Linux. I would be going for as cheap an Nvidia card as I can get. Processor wise, I am looking at the i7-870 CPU, and probably going to buy between 4-8Gb DDR3 ram. Are there any glaring motherboards, devices or chipsets which I should avoid?

The parts I already have, are:

    1/ DVD-RW
    2/ Monitor(s)
    3/ Sata drives

The motherboard I am looking to use is:

    Asus P7H55-M Pro

Any help is most gratefully received. My budget cannot be exceeded.

    Thank you, enjoy your day!

I cant really help with parts, sorry (I dont use much intel gear, and I dont test with ubuntu anyway).

Staticice is great for finding good prices-

Also, in case you dont know and have any thoughts about upgrading in the future- LGA 1156 is going to be discontinued for LGA 1155. They will, of coruse, be incompatible (sop no LGA 1156 CPU in LGA 1155 etc). Also, LGA 1155 will NOT get 6 or more core CPUs, they will be limited to LGA 1366 (and LGA 2011 for xeons).

you didn't mention what the computer will be used for and also as mentioned if you plan to do upgrades later on.

any specific reason to go Intel?
Easy to understand Ubuntu manual with lots of pics: http://ubuntu-manual.org/
Do i need antivirus/firewall in linux?

I can't go beyond telling you it is "general purpose". This PC choosing rigmaroll is a nightmare! What CPU do I need VS what brand CPU VS what ram VS what is compatible with Ubuntu... Argggh! lol

As far as I know, the things to watch for are graphics card/chipset (which you already know), printers, and all-in-one scanner/copier/printers.
Most of the rest it doesn't matter a damn, and the graphics and printer situation seems to be improving.

I wonder... would this one work for Ubuntu:

Seems to be a great spec for the price, also!

you will need to get a sound card for it (if you need it at all) and you could have issues with graphics:
    Shared IntelMB graphics

Well unless it's 4500 series which are on a couple of Linux preinstalled computers.
    otherwise it's ok i guess.

you will also get a windows 7 licence with it.

i always put together my own computers and if not i would not suggest buying branded ones to anyone (unless we are talking about notebooks). it can be cheaper to buy it from some small company that puts them together and the often offer totally personalised configurations. so you could choose linux compatible items only to go in.

It says "H57" chipset, which is apparently Linux compatible. The graphics are Intel 4500 (i3 onboard). Do you know any different?

4500 is compatible ( i've seen many notebooks with Ubuntu Linux preinstalled such as Dell Vostro) . though i dont' know which is this chipset. i was checking here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_GMA#GMA_X4500

    can't find it.
