Red face Re: configuring nvidia under 9.10

I seem to have 3 of them, depending on the Ubuntu version I use. They are called gdm, kdm and kdm-kde4.

I made sure they were all stopped and I ran the sh like you said. But it build 100% of the kernel module and then it stops with an error message:

ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details.
Please see the log entires 'kernel module load error' and 'kernel message' at the end of the file:

    /var/log/nvidia-installer.log

I tried to read it but it makes no sense to me.

    Using: nvidia-installer ncurses user interface
-> You appear to be running in runlevel 1; this may cause problems. For exampl
e: some distributions that use devfs do not run the devfs daemon in runlevel
1, making it difficult for `nvidia-installer` to correctly setup the kernel
module configuration files. It is recommended that you quit installation no
w and switch to runlevel 3 (`telinit 3`) before installing.

Quit installation now? (select 'No' to continue installation) (Answer: No)

    Following what I read here:
    http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=76705

I am going to try again with an older version of the driver. I'll post the result.

    Re: configuring nvidia under 9.10

    Judging by the entry
"You appear to be running in runlevel 1; this may cause problems. For exampl
e: some distributions that use devfs do not run the devfs daemon in runlevel
1, making it difficult for `nvidia-installer` to correctly setup the kernel
module configuration files. It is recommended that you quit installation no
w and switch to runlevel 3 (`telinit 3`) before installing."

it may be better if you use ctrl+alt+F3 to switch to non-gui instead of ctrl+alt+F1.

If you are running Kubuntu desktop environment, you should only have to execute the
    /etc/init.d/kdm stop
and nothing else. Please see my revised instructions on the first page.

That thread that you linked to is nearly 3 years old, and is likely to not benefit you.

    Re: configuring nvidia under 9.10

Thank you for the link. Meanwhile I was trying different things.

I tried the (not beta) drivers:
Linux Display Driver Version 190.42 (27/10/09)
Linux Display Driver Version 185.18.14 (05/06/09)
Linux Display Driver Version 180.22 (08/01/09)

    With the same disappointing result.

I tried different combinations of running sh <driver> from recovery mode or after CNTRL + ALT + F1 from the old functioning KDE, with the display manager being gdm or kdm or kdm-kde4

    No luck.

I discovered there is a specific tool for installing ATI and NVIDIA drivers: it is called envyng (packages = envyng-core and envyng-qt for kde). KDE run command:

    Code:
    sudo envyng -k
There is the equivalent for gnome, if you simply type "envyng" in the terminal it will tell you what it is.

It failed, so I ran it in recovery mode root terminal

    Code:
    sudo envyng -t
    -t means "text mode".

It failed again but it had made some progress towards the result. The next time when I booted in recovery mode and selected the option "xfix" to fix the X server it worked!!!

I still see an error at bootup:
kernel source for 2.6.24-24-rt not installed. Cannot install module.

But I have my X server and KDE (running on gdm but should I care?)

Thanks again MarcoPolo, you've been a great help. Dabl I have not acted on your advice yet but I bookmarked the page and I will read it tomorrow. For the moment I'm just very happy it works!

Any idea about this missing module welcome.

    Re: configuring nvidia under 9.10

Glad I helped, all be it not completely.
I had a look at dabl's link, and he being a KDE user, and the link being on the Kubuntu forums, I would be inclined to follow those instructions over the ones I gave.
Like I said earlier, I am not a kubuntu user, so I am not familiar with the interface. And the commands can vary slightly from ubuntu (Gnome), Kubuntu (KDE), and Xubuntu (XFCE).
I hope you get the card correctly and completely configured.

    Re: configuring nvidia under 9.10

There is definitely a problem between 9.10 and NVIDIA GeForce 8700M. When I run sysinfo and go to the "Hardware" menu I have the option on the top right of the main window of selecting "Graphic card". When I do this the main windows just stays blank, as if there were no graphic card at all.

Maybe I should just wait until January without touching any settings and without doing any update, and then run update and upgrade? What do you think?

    Re: configuring nvidia under 9.10

Have you tried copying the instructions that dabl posted a link to?
Those instructions should work, and it also includes the steps to completely remove any nvidia drivers on your system - used or unused.
Once you are then back to a completely nvidia-driver free system, follow the instructions for:
    2. The official Nvidia way

I see no reason why you should be having so much difficulty. I wouldn't have thought that Ubuntu and Kubuntu differed so much until now.
