Here's a link I found whilst googling for more information about GIMP. It may be inspirational to those users who are still missing PS...

    http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...d.php?t=137715
This person's artwork was drawn completely in the GIMP.

http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho....php?p=2541203 Scroll down until you find the picture of the apples. It's a nice comparison of the capabilities of each programme (although they're all pretty similar)

Wow, with a drawing tablet that program would make a excellent Painting application
Yep, I have it and use it with a WACOM, it's very good

I am in the market for a drawing tablet. Growing up many years ago I was a descent artist with pencil and paper. Although I had got out of drawing by highschool and havent really did anything that I would consider impressive. 15 years later I strongly feel I am coming around with my 2nd wind. The urge to really get back into high end artist work, backed by the drawing programs like GIMP. I feel I could really shine.

I have been looking at some drawing tablets like the Kworld one here listed:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16823260001

It seems like a good entry level pad. I dont have the money for one of those really high end Wacom ones. After I finish my associates in web and PC programming I may be able to justify one when I start my CAD & Drafting degree.

What I am looking for is basicly a pad that I can use to emulate a mouse at high resolutions. Thats about it. If I could find a mouse pen. That prob would be a better option for me.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Exo

Hmm...my WACOM isn't exactly a high end one...it's a bamboo pen & touch, and it was $60 or so. The bamboo range is aimed at beginners, whilst the Intuos and Cintiq (the Cintiq costs CRAZY money by the way) are for professionals. I'm still growing as an artist, and I don't really have an expendable income, so Bamboo was the right choice for me.

WACOM are the best for tablets, but they are unfortunately expensive. I guess you could try Aiptek or Genius. I haven't tried either of them, but they have the advantage of being cheap. With Aiptek, you can get more size for your money than WACOM. For example, from the prices I've looked at on Amazon-
~WACOM Intuos large tablets would be something like $500+
~Aiptek of the same size would be $100ish, maybe? Unfortunately, Aiptek doesn't have the sensitivity of the Wacom Intuos.

Of course, like you mentioned earlier, a high end tablet isn't going to make someone who can't draw any better, and vice versa.
I think WACOM make mice as well, but I haven't tried them...or maybe you could just buy a really sensitive mouse (like a gaming mouse or something) and use that, if you didn't want to invest in a tablet.

If you're serious about getting into digital art, then I think you should start out with a Bamboo, and if you get on well with it, save up for an Intuos. Don't bother with the Cintiq (IMO), they cost stupid money.

And there's size as well....I have a 6x8 tablet, which suits me fine, but some people like to have a lot of drawing space...the bigger the tablet, the more money it'll cost.
I guess it all depends on your circumstances....but I think you have the right idea

You might want to look at this tutorial as well, it has some info on tablets http://oliverma.deviantart.com/art/G...uide-116707172 A lot of it repeats what I just said, but you might find it helpful..

    Hope this helps...

Many thanks Rui, very good info there.

Not much on the gaming mice though, wrist motion just feels to wrong and hurts trying.

I was hoping this one would be a good entry level

Possible this one for the price also instead:

I use Corel12 Graphics Suite, Adobe Illustrator and Paint Shop Pro, mostly Coral Draw and Coral Photo Paint .. though it suits me fine because i like to do a lot of vector art, I am however looking at Photo shop but its gonna take me a while to learn the program.

Those are all commercial programs and nothing to do with Linux.

Kanvus? I haven't had any experience with that tablet brand before...but it looks ok for a beginner. Honestly, I think you should go for it! Any tablet is better than a mouse.
It took me a few days to get used to using a tablet, but once you get used to it, you'll never go back to using a mouse

How did you get Corel's software to work on Ubuntu? I heard they're incompatible with WINE....or are you a dual booter?

Yeah, you can use gimp for raster editing and use inkscape for vector painting (Corel Draw alternative)
