how to map my gamepad to some keyboard key

I am looking for a way to set my gamepad up, so when I push down the two analog stick. it will act like the "Esc" Key. or something similar. I am setting up a Linux Base Console, with all the EMU with Wah!Cade as the front end. I mean I really want to be able to just have two gamepad, and control everything. but in order to quit from EMU back to the front-end Wah!Cade, the 'Esc'key is needed.

    Thanks.

Xpadder does that for Windows, so wine maybe?

Looking in Synaptic, there is a program called joy2key

"joy2key allows one to choose keyboard events for joystick axes and buttons,
so that a joystick or gamepad can be used with an application that doesn't
    have native joystick support."
The idea of copyright did not exist in ancient times, when authors frequently copied other authors at length in works of non-fiction. This practice was useful, and is the only way many authors' works have survived even in part. -- Richard Stallman

That's cool thanks, I'll try that as well.

Alright I've tried joy2key and have to say that it is rather disappointing (anything but userfriendly with a heckuva lot of command line), however I found another program called qjoypad which is easier and uses a gui.
