Oh well. Thanks for taking the time to walk me through all that stuff - guess I'll wait 'til I get a new video card!

Check out slickdeals.net - great prices and the users on those forums typically find special coupon codes and combine it with Bing cash back or Paypal for even more savings. Their search engine is pretty good: http://is.gd/4PDAs But also check out the front page or subscribe to their twitter so you don't lose out on a deal because they go quickly.

I might actually have a deal on an ATI 9250... looks like there was a bug ( https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ra...280%29_and_DVI ) in the driver... is it likely that, as there was a fix for it in Edgy and Feisty that the fix is now incorporated into the regular driver set?

The assertion error message is reported in Lucid in bug 515846 and seems to affects all free, non-DRI2 drivers since mesa 7.7 was introduced. You were running a mesa 7.7 (or beta) version from xorg-edgers, right?
