Absolute Beginner Talk: Karmic Koala Problems or Sluggishness...TURN COMPIZ OFF ASAP!
Well...here we are at the tech bench...with the red phone ringing and the ubuntu signal shining off the clouds over Karmic City...
Advice:
***backup, Backup, BACKUP(did we remind you to do your back-ups/clones yet?)***
Do Not Upgrade...ever(why take your running system and possibly crash it?)
(even after your test-drive you should do a fresh install to a separate partition if at all possible...why take chances?)
Download(be nice, use bittorrent if at all possible!)
Slow-burn(yes, as slow as your burner will go!)

Pop it in, boot it up, select your language, then select "Check disk for defects"
If the check results in errors...figure out why(and don't use that bad disk)
If it checks good then reboot as per the instructions
Select your language
Select "Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer"
As soon as you can, go turn compiz OFF before your system becomes unstable
System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects...Select "None"
(here, our advice is simple and straight-forward, you don't need compiz to use your computer...but you do need other stuff like your wireless and such...so for experimentation and your test-drive, leave compiz off until you see the other stuff working for you)
Once you are satisfied and sure you want to install Karmic, why not do a fresh install to a separate partition...thereby protecting your current running ubuntu version...just in case...who needs the headaches? right!)

Also note that part of the length of the installation is consumed by downloading language packs(if internet access is available) and you can skip those if you don't need them(they occur around 85 percent into the install sequence IIRC)
We are assuming that the install would consume less time if no internet access is available to the installer, although we cannot establish any specific time-frames as equipment and connectivity/download speeds will vary...sometimes greatly.

As always, your mileage may vary, buyer beware, and buyer be aware
