Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala
Re: Share with the community your Karmic Koala install/upgrade experience

Clean install of 9.10 64 bit on two Shuttles (Atom processor) with no problems whatsoever.
I plan to backup some data and then replace my new Windows 7 installation.

For me...

Re: Share with the community your Karmic Koala install/upgrade experience

I tried an upgrade on my Pentium Dual-Core E2180 with an Asus P5N73-AM Motherboard and after the upgrade got the Ubuntu X server failure. I tried several different ways to reset the x server configuration but nothing would work, so I opted for a fresh install to the see if that would work.

Hardware config, first time through:
2 IDE Hard drives connected to the single IDE port, 1 IDE CD-ROM drive connected via an IDE raid card set to operate as an IDE add in board.

Booted to install, answered language prompt, changed to install Ubuntu and pressed enter. White Ubuntu logo displayed and ghosted after a few minutes. (Basically two logo's on screen, one to the upper left of the first in a slightly muted color.)

Tried again..No logo issues, but after a few minutes the screen went blank. Hit the space bar and saw an initfs something prompt.

I tried several different hardware configs with the IDE raid controller in the machine. I finally removed it and with 1 drive and CD-ROM connected via IDE tried again with the same results.

One interesting thing to note. I got 9.04 on this box by moving my hard drive into it with the OS already installed. This is my first attempt to install Ubuntu on this box.

BTW, Windows would not install either until I moved the CD-ROM drive to the integrated IDE controller. This box is currently running windows, but I'd prefer it run Ubuntu so any help would be appreciated.

Re: Share with the community your Karmic Koala install/upgrade experience

Upgraded 2 UNR machines and everything went well. I had a minor issue with the menu in UNR but I found a workaround: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1312877. Otherwise everything seems to be great. Much improved video on my CULV. Very nice!

Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala
Re: Share with the community your Karmic Koala install/upgrade experience

I did a clean install of the 64-bit release on a machine I just built and it went off without a hitch. The nVidia graphics worked correctly unlike the problems I had with 9.04. On the down side I haven't been able to get extensions into OpenOffice, may have something to with 64-bit?

On my Compaq Evo N610c laptop I first attempted to do an in place upgrade. Well, it had major graphics hiccups with Mobility Radeon 7500 chip. It upgraded with Visual effects set to Normal. Well it worked somewhat on 9.04 but as soon as I tried to open any application (Writer, Package Manager, etc) the screen locked up. Hard reboot required. Set the Visual Effects to None and most applications would start but some system apps, e.g. System Monitor, would be nothing but a window that looked like oily cheesecloth. I figured something didn't upgrade correctly so I did a clean install (home data reside on a different partition) but got the same results. Went back to 9.04 on the laptop and it works fine again. What is the diff between the video driver from 9.04 to 9.10 that this is happening?

I have one more machine to I'm going to play with and it has a nVidia graphics AGP card (kind of old but 128 M RAM, so it's a good little card). Honestly, the ATI graphics seem to be as flaky in Ubuntu as they were back in the Windows 95/98/2000/early XP installs I used to do.

I'm afraid I'm amongst the sufferers. Clean install on an Athlon 64 X2 3800+, 2Gb RAM and Geforce 8400GS. Serious problems with the display, Nvidia control panel not working properly, utterly incapable of detecting the correct resolution on m 19" TFT display and huge problems with Xserver. Ready to throw in the towel and downgrade to 9.04. It's a shame though, there's a lot to like in this distro.

My Karmic update went flawlessly (the download speeds were another story). Now if only Microsuck could get the Winblows 7 update to be as smooth! Any and all boot related issues were caused by Winblows and were solved by threads found on Ubuntu Forums! Chalk one up for Ubuntu!

Re: Share with the community your Karmic Koala install/upgrade experience

install of 9.10 was much better than live cd of 9.10.

considering how clueless I am, and how advanced an install I was doing, turned out very well.

Worked perfectly, clean installation and all my drivers were there, ready and waiting...... Booting in 24 seconds, can you get any better than that?
