There has been a small change in MPlayer which now requires something like the following:

    Code:
    unrar p -inul file.rar | mplayer -cache 2048 -
    All the best,

    Andrew

It works well. Also, cache=2048 can be added to $HOME/.mplayer/config and $HOME/.mplayer/mencoder.conf so that mplayer/mencoder automatically cache the files before playback.

    Thanks again for this.

No problems . I wish I could pinpoint where and why this change came into being...

    All the best,

64bit users in particular might be interested to see that the FFmpeg Summer of Code is, amongst other things, taking aim at Windows Media Audio Lossless:

    http://wiki.multimedia.cx/index.php?...0#WMA_lossless

If this becomes reality it will mean that wma is pretty well covered by FFmpeg and by extension MPlayer and vlc, with decoders recently in place for wmapro and wmavoice.

    I concur.

I just wanted to add that the no-gui package is good if you want to put a different frontend on too, for example I compile mplayer without a GUI and instead compile smplayer from svn.

Furthermore, although beyond the scope of this guide, it is useful if you want to compile menconder without mplayer

I hope so, even though I have no WMA lossless it's still gonna be useful, like the WMA voice recently implemented

Thanks for the comprehensive howto. When using the backports repos, apt-get always wants to upgrade my svn mplayer package.
Is there maybe something wrong (incomatible) with your checkinstall version parameter?

In synaptic lock the existing mplayer package that you installed via checkinstall and the updates wont touch that anymore.

This guide is building mplayer-nogui and the version 3:1.0~svn-rxxxxx-1 would be/is higher than any ubuntu repo mplayer-nogui

Are you sure you're not getting an update to 'mplayer' which in ubuntu is the old frontend package - gmplayer. (and basically worthless to have with a current svn.

Or is a ppa involved? - don't see an updated mplayer package in karmic backports anyway

Re: Howto: Utilise the svn MPlayer to Improve Karmic Koala's 'mplayer-nogui' Package

Some excellent news: mplayer now has native playback of wma speech:

    Code:
andrew@skamandros~$ mplayer -ac help | grep wma
wma9dmo dmo working Windows Media Audio 9 DMO [wma9dmod.dll]
wmadmo dmo working Windows Media Audio DMO [wmadmod.dll]
wma9spdmo dmo working Windows Media Audio 9 Speech DMO [wmspdmod.dll]
wma9spdshow dshow working Windows Media Audio 9 Speech DShow [wmavds32.ax]
ffwmav1 ffmpeg untested DivX audio v1 (FFmpeg) [wmav1]
ffwmav2 ffmpeg untested DivX audio v2 (FFmpeg) [wmav2]
ffwmapro ffmpeg untested WMA Pro audio (FFmpeg) [wmapro]
ffwmavoice ffmpeg untested WMA Voice audio (FFmpeg) [wmavoice]
Some great benefits from being close to the bleeding edge of MPlayer and FFmpeg .
