    Game recording solution for Linux

    Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone is interested in a program to record games for Linux - something like Fraps that exists for Windows.

If yes, would you also be willing to pay for it - and what do you think would be a reasonable price?

This question is a bit hard to answer...

As there are many 3D and 2D software, and many music software - and each is different.
It off course depends on the software it's features, stability and quality.

I think we already have some desktop recording software, dunno if they could be used for games as well (at full screen and high quality).

I myself don't really need a game recording software, but others might be interested.

There is also other question, if you (or anyone else) plans to charge money for the software - most likely it won't be FOSS, which could upset some users.

Well besides the specialized glc, there's recordmydesktop and istanbul (dead), who aren't specialized in capturing GL stuff but still may get the job done.

A game recording app would be something very trivial. The thing I like about software for Linux is that not every little trivial thing is shareware and costs around 10-15$ to get the full version of. It's annoying.

If I could, I'd rather contribute to glc or something else.

Frankly I don't see any new Linux user having the required knowledge to operate glc. Especially if they come from using Fraps, then glc looks like a dinosaur - being terminal-only.

Contributing for free is nice, but I'm looking if there's any interest in it to begin with. Personally I already contribute to 3-4 projects and yet nobody wants to contribute to this to have it be a reality

While it would be nice to have, I don't see much of a need for it - especially since there really aren't that many games available (that are worth recording) for Linux. Then there are of course already some free solutions out there, so I don't think a commercial alternative will have much success.

It will be nice to have this kind of app, but still, it's not a must-have. IMHO, the best way is to GPL it, make it free, and create a donation link

Recording the occasional glitch or funny multiplayer moment, or even playing through with commentary (Let's Play series) is what drives the recording scene, and this is an area that Linux is sorely lacking in. The ext3 filesystem would be beautiful to work with on real-time recording processes.

Mind sharing a video recording done with recordmydesktop of a 3D game?
