Laptop will not go past "Starting up . . ."

Put Ubuntu 9.04 on my laptop recently, worked great, and decided today that I'd upgrade to the 9.10 beta. It upgraded fine, restarted, got to:
    Boot from (hd0,0) ext3, the number/letter string, and 'Starting up . . .'
    And then just sits there.

I have a Toshiba Satellite from 2005, I believe. I'm not sure off-hand what the specs are.

Same thing here... I have a Toshiba Satellite A100 and since I upgraded last week from Jaunty to Karmic it freezes on start up.

I think it has something to do with the kernel as I used to be able to start from the previous kernel. I also encounter the same problems as you do in your other post (no sound, no touchpad etc.) and I hope that the final release will correct that.

By the way, starting from Live CD (Karmic RC) is only possible if I disable ACPI...
Any help with these issues will me much appreciated.
