Howdy...

I have seen a *lot* of posts on ATI and jaunty... this is *not* a rant... im just confused.

i ran a live cd of jaunty on my dell laptop ati radeon x1400 and it worked fine... and even with desktop effects! with no proprietry driver.

so... i installed it in a new partition. same result.

when i upgraded my existing 8.10 install the graphics were *really* slow to draw. gnome do and xbmc were functional but unusable... i rebooted in safe mode and reconfigured xorg.

now ive completely broken X and the login screen is garbled and the system hangs.

i can probably resolve the hanging issue by reverting the xorg.conf file but does anyone have any idea what i should do to begin fixing the slow display... i *know* it works on a fresh install. thats what ill do if i have to but id rather not move 100GB of data across the network!

any help appreciated
