    Monitor not detected on laptop

I installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my Compaq CQ60 laptop. The refresh rate is stuck at 0 and the display settings shows the monitor is not detected. I have tried installing the Linux version of the driver for my video card (NVidia GeForce 8200M G) but it downloads in the form of a .run file, and when I try to run that in the terminal, the terminal just opens and closes immediately. I am totally new to Linux and am clueless about anything that is not self-explanatory. Other than this problem I love Linux, but i really need to get this problem solved.
    Thanks for any help.
