Tascam US-122 (external sound card) troubles <solved>

I've been trying for SO long, scouring every bit of info that comes up, and still nothing seems to be working.

My external sound card/interface just WON'T work.
    I followed these instructions: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/TASCAM_US-122

and I get the light on, it stayed on when I plugged/unplugged it, sometimes I even got sound through it via the preferences > sound > test sound stuff...
-- but most of the time it would just freeze my computer, and I would need to hard reboot it.

I found a way to uninitialize it, and then followed these directions: http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/Tascam_US-122
-- subbing the most recent alsa-firmware (1.0.20) in.

Now I don't get any sound, and it's still freezing when I try and test it.

    I really need some help.

Re: Tascam US-122 (external sound card) troubles

These things are a pain to get working. I did it three times under Debian, copy'n'pasting the commandlines to get there and on both subsequent tries I had to modify the procedure.

Here's the latest. Again, Debian, not Ubuntu.
    Code:
    - install package alsa-firmware-loaders
    - in debian it is misspelled us-112
    - debian forgets to install the firmwares
       10 fetch http://ftp.mj2.org/pub/alsa/firmware/alsa-firmware-1.0.17.tar.bz2
            mkdir /usr/share/alsa/firmware
            zcat | tar fx -
            ./configure  --with-hotplug-dir=/usr/share/alsa/firmware &&
make. Do NOT `make install`, it messes up the installation.
            mv usx2yloader /usr/share/alsa/firmware/.
            sh /etc/init.d/udev restart
    - plug out, plug in
    - aplay -l
    card 4: USX2Y [TASCAM US-X2Y], device 0: US-X2Y Audio [US-X2Y Audio #0]
      Subdevices: 1/1
      Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    - amidi -l
    IO hw:4,0,0 TASCAM US-X2Y MIDI 1
Stock up on coffee or beer or whatever keeps you going. You'll need it.

Re: Tascam US-122 (external sound card) troubles

Thank you a bunch for replying. I think a really hard part of all this is when people don't even try and help.
    -- so thank you.

Though, to be honest, I'm still pretty new at all this, so I don't really understand a lot of your note (I don't really know how to break all of it down into steps and commands)--totally my shortfall, I know. Is there any way to translate it into newb language? If it's too much effort, I totally understand. I can try and get someone on the IRC channel to help (though sometimes they're too busy). Shrugs.

Also, I've been reading a lot of tutorials/how-to's etc. and I keep noticing that I always have the light on my us-122 on even though sound is not getting into the box (though, the only things I've tried are the preferences > sound, and JACK for testing--so there could be faults there too). It's just really hard running diagnostics on it when I don't really know what's wrong with it.
-- The light's on, that means it's initialized, right? So why wouldn't I be getting sound from it?? :/ I guess if it's a bad install, there could be a million things wrong with it.

Let me know your thoughts, and if you have any further help, it'd be wonderful.

Re: Tascam US-122 (external sound card) troubles

    I've tried https://help.ubuntu.com/community/TASCAM_US-122
    I've tried http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/Tascam_US-122

I've tried subbing the latest alsa firmware (1.0.20), I've tried the 1.0.17, I've tried the 1.0.19.

I can't even get the preferences > sound tests to work anymore.

    This is so frustrating.

The light is on, but I can't figure out how to get sound from it.

is there something else I should be testing? Some other place to check it? Gr...
