Install the "nautilus-gksu" package. Log out, and log back in again. Now whenever you need to open a folder or file as root, just right-click on it and choose "Open as Administrator".
To copy files across as root, open the destination folder as root using this method, and then you'll be able to copy, rename and move.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.
