    glx issue

    Hi all,

I'm fairly new to this Linux stuff but I'm really liking it so far except for this issue which has been driving me nana's for 2 days.

First up my computer is a HP 5129tx laptop with a Nvidia geforce go7400 tripple booting ubuntu, vista and windows 7 rc (installed as a vhd file, this has nothing to do with my issue but I thought it was a cool feature)

When I first installed ubuntu all went ok except the gfx drivers wouldnt work and I was stuck in low gfx mode, I downloaded the latest drivers from NVidia and installed them following their instructions and everything worked perfectly, I was able to enable the Extra visual theme's and all the other rad open GL stuff.

After I got that sorted I was mucking around with other cool visual effects you can install (whatever that weird 3d cube thing with the water effects is called) and at some point all the open GL stuff stopped working, I'm not entirely sure when because I only noticed it when I was trying to get the avant window navigator working and it said I couldnt.

So to try and correct the problem I have tried the following

    Installing latest Nvidia drivers again
    Installing older Nvidia drivers
Removing all traces of the Nvida drivers (to the best of my ability, numpty windows user so might not have been perfect) and reinstalling
    using the Ubuntu builtin drivers
    Using other peoples xorg.conf files
    Using alternate libglx.so files
    Praying
sacrificing a small goat (well a lolly that looked kinda like a goat)

Nothing seems to have worked and I cant seem to find anyone having the exact same problem anywhere so I have resorted to asking for help!!

I have attached my xorg.config and my xorg.0.log if anyone needs any more details let me know

    Thanks!

    Re: glx issue

I'm having the same problem after also trying to install the new NVidia drivers.
I've done through the whole unistall reinstall process and still no luck.

As far as I can tell from other posts the main problem is:
    Code:
    (EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libglx.so
but I have no idea what to do about it

I'm not including my xorg.conf or Xorg.0.log files, as they are virtually identical to Sootie's

    Re: glx issue

X is probably trying to load the open-source X.org version of libglx.so
Nvidia uses a proprietary version of this file. Search your filesystem for libglx and make sure you have one from the nvidia driver.

You may have to add a section like this to xorg.conf to point X to the nvidia version:
    Code:
    Section "Files"
    ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia"
    ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
    EndSection

    Re: glx issue

Sorry for being slack I did actually get this fixed eventually.

It turned out to have not all that much to do with the NVdia or other drivers and more to do with something I had recently installed.

I basically uninstalled all my recent changes and removed a few things I had set to auto start with the computer, re-booted re-installed the nvidia drivers and everything was pretty.

    thanks to all who helped.

    Re: glx issue

I found a slightly less hardcore solution to this problem:

When I installed the new NVidia driver, it created a whole bunch of symlinks to driver files, however when I tried to reinstall the old driver, these symlinks weren't updated.

My solution was to search for all file names containing the driver version I tried to install: 185.18.36 in my case.

In every directory where these files occurred, the older versions of the files where still there, but they where no longer linked as the newer versions changed the symlinks.

So I manually changed all the symlinks to point to the old files again and hey presto all problems gone

Hope this helps someone, I've been a bit vague so feel free to post for more info
