I installed Kubuntu yesterday via Synaptic, just to try it out, and decided to stick with Gnome instead. But ever since then the subpixel smoothing has not worked. According to Appearance Preferences->Fonts, the subpixel smoothing should be on, but its not working, and none of the options effect any sort of change in the text appearance. I've since uninstalled everything the Kubuntu package installed, but the subpixel rendering still doesn't work.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I might fix this?
