LXDE - still a lot of RAM used

I run LXDE, and I'm still finding that a lot of memory is being used. I don't have anything 'gnome' running and wicd tray is on. Anything I can do to take it down some? I'm running about ~300MB most of the time on a ASUS eee 1005HA-V, Jaunty

Re: LXDE - still a lot of RAM used

unused ram is waisted ram, 300mb is pretty common for a modern system, the more ram you have the more a linux system will cache to improve performance. if you tweak it to use less ram, the system can actually feel slower, because it would have to load everything fresh each time you use it, caching it in ram is faster, just let the computer do it's thing, don't worry about it unless there is a problem, just do what ever it is you do.

Re: LXDE - still a lot of RAM used

I'm using 431mb of ram right now on a full jaunty 9.04 x64 gnome install, with conky running. I have 4 gb total ram. I don't know, I think that sounds about right if I remember from running LXDE or Openbox. What's your total ram in the eeepc, 1 or 2 gbs?

I have 1GB. I thought LXDE was supposed to be light on resources? I decided against installing conky or screenlets for that purpose. It just seems like an awful lot.

Maybe....I'm just going from memory...I can understand why want to cut it down...I'll check and post back if I find anything useful...

it is, but what good is having resources if it's not being used. it's not a lxde problem, the kernel is detierming the way to use resouces by what resources are available, in most cases i have found that it will try to use 60% of the available resources.

in the past having more resouces free meant a better running system, that is no longer the case, as programs have gotten bigger & resources have increased it only makes sense to use those resouces to speed up the programs.

i have been working on low resource systems for some time & have learned a lot how to get the most out of them & 1 thing i don't do is mess with how it handles resources, which lets things feel as fast as they should.

so i'm telling you if you want the speed, let it do what it does, it does not matter what desktop or window manager, let the computer do the thinking, you can worry about more important things.

    i use a vaio pcg-f430 450mhz 256mb ram running gnome & a ibm-t20 700mhz 128mb ram running jwm, i'm currently on the ibm.

I have been working with lxde a lot lately and I don't use that much resources. I would suggest installing preload and upgrading your lxde to the current version if your using the ones from the ubuntu repositories.

Re: LXDE - still a lot of RAM used

just to make sure we are all clear, ill use my system as an example re: RAM and explain two relevant parts.

    Code:
    [chris: ~]$ free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 5953 2452 <-1st 3500 0 146 1676
    -/+ buffers/cache: 629 <-2nd 5323
    Swap: 0 0 0
    [chris: ~]$
the first bold/underline/italic line is RAM used including cache -- your computer loading things ahead of time (based on guestimates and past usage patterns) to make starting them quicker later on. its good that so much is used -- in fact, so little is used on my system that it has me going "wtf, why isnt more of my RAM being used???"... on this line, unused RAM is wasted RAM. If Ubuntu's guess about what 'should' be loaded ahead of time is wrong, its no big deal... it instantly hands this RAM over to what it should have guessed when you do start that given program.

the second bold/underline/italic line is RAM used minus cache. this is what we worry about when we talk about bloat. in my case, so much is used because i have 10 ff tabs, a tv show, rhythmbox with a 3000 song playlist, and pidgin running.... on the other hand, when i have multiple VM's running much more of that gets used. when i boot into my LXDE desktop environment before i start opening things and whatnot, it's usually around 65 mb used.

Re: LXDE - still a lot of RAM used

What I am getting from the last two posts is that output of free -m gives the amount being used for EVERYTHING, not just process, is this correct? If that's it, I'll let it alone, it's really because I'm so OCD about these things. I managed to take a lot of unnecessary stuff off startup. It brought it down some.
