No, or very low sound on Dell inspiron 1525

I just installed 9.4 onto my inspiron. When I went to listen to any sounds I can't hear it out of my speakers, and it's just barely above a whisper with headphones. That's with the volume completely maxed.

I'm somewhat of a newbie, so lets go easy on the idiot comments and use words I'll understand.

My soundcard is a sigmatel chipset.

Help would be much appreciated, as I'm big on music

Finally figured out how to use alsamixer -c0 (left/right, up/down) and set everything to max & we seem to be OK now...

    - er ;late update... playback now seems OK but record is really quiet - any suggestions??

    Cheers!
