Yes
Yes; everyone should have the pleasure of using linux
No
No; what would separate me from all the stupid people?
No; I don't want linux to be adapted to fit "everyone's" needs...
I don't want GNU/Linux to "dominate the desktop". I want GNU/Linux to exist as part of a competitive ecosystem of desktop operating systems, rather than serving as a tiny fraction of an ecosystem dominated by Windows.
Basically, I would like GNU/Linux to have the market share it deserves.
IMHO, to try to sell something to a trusting client that they could easily buy for free is a professional cardinal sin. I was 13 when I turned 'professional' and I won't throw away all those years now for the sakes of an almighty dollar. People even tell me they've tried to eat money, but for all I know it digests as well broken glass if you have the right somatic temperature.
I know it's a little tangental and just a bit of a 'Sunday' thought, but imagine market-share as maybe just 'base-camp' of Kilimanjaro!
The code is free but the data is priceless.
I think for an operating system to dominate the desktop, or just for it to be widely recognized as a desktop operating system, it has to be made by one corporation, like Windows and OSX.
Linux has a beauty of its own in being free as in speech, but sadly it is for this very reason that Linux will never be widely used on the desktop.
Server: 2.2GHz Athlon 64; 4GB; 2TB; Debian 5 x64
LividEmperor: 3.3GHz i5 2500K; 8GB; 660GB; Ubuntu 10.10 x64 + Windows 7 x64
Netbook1: 1.6GHz Atom; 2GB; 160GB; Ubuntu 10.10 x86
Dogeatdog: 3GHz Phenom II; 3GB; 1TB; Windows 7 x64
I want to see Open OSs dominate the desktop. Linux, BSD, Haiku. That way they can all innovate and compete, but also make computing better for everyone.
Where's the "don't care" option?
Where's the "I don't care option"? It's just a hobby of sorts for me. I couldn't care less if it gets main stream adoption or not. For those of you that are worried it would become 'boring' (ie. Usable, Complete, User Focused...) you could always just use an older, buggier version of the kernel and start the whole process over again.
