I want to remove the Gnome DE

I successfully installed XFCE4 and am currently using it. I prefer it to Gnome, and would like to get rid of the Gnome DE. I know that some apps I use are dependent on some Gnome packages, so I need to save those. I just want to make XFCE4 the default so that I can return to auto-logging in. Is there a way to safely remove the Gnome DE but keep the necessary packages? Any help is appreciated.

Thank you, it worked just fine. I did have to tweak a couple of things afterward, though, such as compiz. I had to reinstall it and add it to startup to make sure that the windows opened with borders.
