    WinRar Linux

Is WinRar for Linux freeware? I hear it is. I know the Pocket PC versions is.

That's weird that the Pocket PC Version and possibly the Linux version are free but not the main one. Is it because they figure Linux users and Pocket PC users make up a smaller portion of the market so they don't bother profiting from it?

Also I have the tar.gz, do I extract it, CD into it and type:
    make
    make install
    too install it?

Both the free and the non-free versions are in the repositories. No need to install from source.

there is free package for uncompressing rar archives, and shareware package for compressing them.

And my recommendation about the files you have downloaded is to drop them into trash can and sue Ubuntu's package management tools instead to download & install your software.

I use 7zip, it's in the repo. It takes .rar along with about 10 other compressed types

so does Gnome's own archive manager tool, and you don't even need to install anything extra to use it (apart from rar/unrar to add .rar support).

    Re: WinRar Linux

Why install Winrar when file-roller, which installed by default, natively extracts rar files. Rar and unrar are also available in the repositories.

    No you don't!

To install stuff you should never download anything your self without knowing it is the only available option.
    1. Look at the top panel and click
    2. System → Administration → Synaptic Package Manager
    3. Insert your password
    4. type into the filter: rar
    5. Click the box next to unrar (note that you might want some different package, this is just a suggestion, the nonfree one might be what you want) and click Mark for Installation
    6. Click Apply
    7. Insert your password
    8. Watch it being downloaded and set up
    9. Use Archive manager with .rar files

    Re: WinRar Linux

I know how to use the repos, didn't know that (Win)Rar was there... I just seem the tar.gz file on their website.

And I use 7-Zip. I use the 7-Zip file manager in Windows and it's the best because it opens 7-Zip and RAR. It doens't make RARs, but it makes 7-Zips so that's unneeded anyways.

However I do come across a few RAR files that the 7-Zip file manager won't open that WinRar does, that's why I am interested in installing it.
