I wish I knew. Looking at the moment. So i can open them without opening the bloatware openoffice, which always totally crashes my X unrecoverably.

AbiWord gets 4 stars in Ubuntu Add/Remove though probably not all those stars are for its RTF capabilities.

Re: Prefered Rich Text Editor in Ubuntu?

I had the same problem and found one, so far: FocusWriter (at gottcode.org).

It's terrible I cannot use Ted, it seems to disappear somewhere after installing the .deb, never to be found again, not even via command line or a locate.

FocusWriter is one of a series of "no-distractions" text editors, such as TextRoom, JDarkRoom and PyRoom (this one is in the Software Center). This latter produces only plain text (still dunno about the other two), which you can format later in a word processor template such as those in Abiword or OpenOffice. You can do that with rich text too, of course.

gEdit only produces plain system text and, afaik, so does Kate.

Note organizers such as Zim also produce formatted text, not necessarily RTF.

    For focuswriter:

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gottcode/gcppa
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install focuswriter

I didn't know anybody still used RTF.
