    What does ~/ mean

I am trying to install virtual box, and the instructions tell me to save the key to ~/ directory. ?????

    That's your user's home directory.

In a terminal type "cd ~/" & hit tab, it'll autocomplete to /home/username.

+1, yes, it is the same as going to the places menu and choosing Home Folder.
