    Re: server newb needs help

Running Xampp software on both laptop and desktop/server. When I enter 'host google.com' into my desktop/server I get :

    google.com has address 74.125.127.100
    google.com has address 74.125.67.100
    google.com has address 74.125.45.100
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached

httpd.config is kind of long, but:

    Code:
    #
    # This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
    # configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
    # See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2> for detailed information.
    # In particular, see
    # <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
    # for a discussion of each configuration directive.
    #
    # Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
    # what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
    # consult the online docs. You have been warned.
    #
    # Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
    # of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
    # server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
    # with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
    # with ServerRoot set to "/opt/lampp" will be interpreted by the
    # server as "/opt/lampp/logs/foo.log".

    #
    # ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
    # configuration, error, and log files are kept.
    #
    # Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
    # ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
    # at a local disk. If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
    # httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.
    #
    ServerRoot "/opt/lampp"

    #
    # Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
    # ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
    # directive.
    #
    # Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
    # prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.
    #
    #Listen 12.34.56.78:80
    Listen 80

    # To be able to use the functionality of a module which was built as a DSO you

    Re: server newb needs help

If you are running a desktop version on your server, I would do all your testing on that machine before moving to other networked machines.

Are you sure XAMPP is running?

The following will show you if the service is running.

    Code:
    top
Try restarting it to see if things change.

    Code:
    /opt/lampp/lampp restart

You may also try entering the full url to test on your local machine.

    http://localhost/xampp/index.php

Verify you have the index.html or index.php in the correct location.

    Code:
    ls -alt /opt/lampp/htdocs
You may have better luck on the XAMPP forums, as most folks here are running LAMPP stack.
Nothing is ever easy, but if it is difficult you must be doing it wrong.

And when trying to load '192.168.1.3' in my laptop's browser it loads it's local 'localhost' page. I've never set a firewall up, so unless one is installed by default in Ubuntu 9.04, then I shouldn't have one. My router is a Netgear WGR614v8. I'll plug my laptop into the router and see if that gives me different results than wirelessly...Thanks for all the advice/suggestions
It shows the different address because it is showing your external IP address, the address of your router to the rest of the internet.

What I mean to say is, the server is running fine on my local machine, I just can't link it to the internet. And what I mean by that is, yes my machine does have internet access, and yes the server software is running, but I can't figure out how to access it from an external machine... Arg.

Whoa! Alright! when I type in the address I got from dyndns.com into an external computer's browser it tries to connect to my localhost page!! It says it can't, "establish a connection to the server" but the url changes to "http://localhost/musicneverstopped/index.php" which is where I'm trying to get to! So now, how do I get it to connect to the server? Where could mistakes lie? Thanks to all in advance

Sounds like a problem with the webpage you have on the server, you need to change the location to be the domain name, not "localhost". For example in Wordpress it has the option to change it in the admin control panel.
