Move ubuntu server 9.04 install HD on to new C3-2 Mobo, but need generic kernel

I have a nice install of ubuntu server 9.04 running on a old P III 800MHz system. running the server x86 kernel.

The old Mobo has a bugy BIOS and a failing CPU Fan. I'd like to move to drive to a new cheap Mobo, it's a Via C3-2 1GHz (which i know runs the generic x86 kernel correctly, without problem).

So i need to install the generic kernel to the drive, how can i do this, anyone know a good howto? Or do i just need to reinstall the system, start over!?
