Am just want to know the search technique used in scalpel and foremost as open source forensics tools to search for certain file signature in the image file

you might want to look at a distribution that focuses on forensics these 5 BackTrack, CAINE, DEFT Linux, Helix, and nUbuntu all (acording to distrowatch.com) focuses on forensics and are based on Ubuntu
