hey and welcome to linux, if you go to you top panel and right click options should come up to your looking for something like add window list to the panel it should display the open programs in the top , add the desktop switcher and a trash icon if you wish, then you can delete the bottom bar , the dock on the bottom is probably awn or cairo dock both are available in the universe (add/remove), sorry if its not explained well im on crunchbang and using openbox instead of gnome,
    What arrests my attention...
is the fact, that this space is inhabited.

Cool thanks man! Another question though is, how do I change the theme of the cairo dock (just randomly picked it lol) and how do I move the applications and executable file icons onto it?

    this picture features a mere gnome-panel !
when you try Cairo-Dock, please don't use the version in the Ubuntu repository, which is a really ancient version.

Avant Window Navigator (AWN) and Gnome-Do's Docky are also popular docks you might want to check out.

+1 on gnome do docky. It's the best dock on any OS, beats the SH!7 out of the dock in OSX IMNSHO.

I'm not so enthusiastic about AWN, it used to be good before gnome do docky.
