Well, I've never coaxed 5.1 sound out of Wine. You might not have a 5.1 soundcard or speakers, but for some gamers, thats at least a minor omission.

Its nice to have a linux client, just to avoid Wine unless you have to, and to show support for linux by buying games. If no-one sells them, theres no market, so no-one makes them, so no-one sells them. Catch 22.

I wouldn't rely too much on that, the lack of gnu/linux support still remains a problem.. and UT3's release drop wasn't any good sign..
True, but the fact that the renderer is OpenGL helps alot
when it comes to performance. As far as I know, the windows version
uses the directX api to interface with the actual renderer which
is OpenGL based. I suspect the code is 'somewhat' clean.

What id game has not run under WINE on release?
Doesn't mean they should drop support though, multiplayer
support in Wolfenstein is broken as of now. Punkbuster is a problem.

It even runs well under FreeBSD 7.2, at least for me.
Very console oriented though, not the best game tbh.

That's exactly what I mean, talking about lucky circumstances

    Point taken
Flukes are not good for WINE gaming in general.

I suspect id will appeal only to console people from now on anyway.
Rage is designed for a controller instead of the keyboard/mouse.

Strange, considering Carmack has always said the keyboard/mouse
is a better interface than the console controller. I agree.

Wolfenstein doesen't even have a 90 degree FOV by default, and the
console is disabled by default. Movement is not very fluid either.

As somebody on linux gaming said, Carmack will become the next Warren
Spector. It's safe to say that the id glory days are over.

Zenimax media inc takeover == death of id.

I don't even have windows installed, but I do have wine, and I simply don't care. If it's fun, I'll play it
Because as DestyNovaX mentioned, it is a fluke that the game runs so well
on WINE. There are other factors that could have led to a Crysis
situation whereby we are waiting months for a Bronze rating.

It's a game of roulette when it comes to WINE.
I honestly don't even care about id anymore after reading HardForum.
Looks like id are shunning Linux, along with Windows gamers.

This will come across as childish, but having been a long
time supporter of id software games, I have this to say:

    <snip> Zenimax/J.C/id software.

Yepp, this is how marketing, as well as some famous monopolists do, ruins every good thing... and, for a long-standing UT fan (and ID's Fps games in general) like me, that's pretty harsh to accept..
Moreover, John Carmack's alleged declarations quoted in some other topic do anything but confirm this death sentence to ID's historical gnu/linux support..
    What a shame, anyway...

It is a shame for the community indeed.

Epic are really screwing fans over with the UT3 Linux client
I do think it will be released, but the damage is done.
Not like they are strapped for cash in fairness.

Seems to me that epic and id only care about cash these days
as you mentioned above. They have to make a profit, I understand that
but letting down the community purely because of monetary reasons is bad.

Gotta say, it's times like these that you begin to appreciate the freedom
of OSS software. Development won't halt to a standstill because
of politics. Even a fork is possible if required.

It will be a cold day in hell I run non OSS software on my servers
No more open sourcing of code I suspect from id either. Shame.
