Miniature, temporary web+PHP server for testing?

After a bit of a break, it seems, I'm back to building a bunch of web sites and at this point I have some stuff to do with back-ends, involving PHP. I really don't want to install all of Apache and PHP on my main computer (and I don't have a secondary one to hand the task to at the moment), so does anyone know of some kind of test server app that provides those services in a tidy, small way that's just enough for quickly glancing around on the local computer?
For example, Django lets this happen with django-admin testserver.

I'd probably create a VMWare (or virtualbox) virtual machine and install apache on that. Of course, I'm already using VMWare for other purposes, so it's not an additional install to me.
