    hmm, try this in your terminal;

run "mount /dev/sdb1 /media/disk" as root. Replace "sdb1" with the hard drive and partition you want to mount and "disk" with what you want to call it.

ok, if you know the partition type, you can include it in your command.

    mount -t ext3 /dev/sdb1 /media/disk

For ntfs partitions, replace ext3 with ntfs-3g. For fat32 and fat16, use vfat. If that wont do it, do you mind giving us more info on what we're dealing with?

    Please run, "sudo fdisk -l".

Re: USB HD is there but not mounting

once i run the mount part that you suggested i got this message
    Code:
    paddy@paddy-laptop:~$ sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb /media/Myfiles
    Failed to read bootsector (size=0)
Failed to mount '/dev/sdb': Invalid argument
The device '/dev/sdb' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS.
Maybe the wrong device is used? Or the whole disk instead of a
partition (e.g. /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1)? Or the other way around?
    fdisk bring up the following

    Code:
    Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
    Disk identifier: 0xa6e508e7

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sda1 * 1 2553 20506941 83 Linux
    /dev/sda4 2554 19457 135781380 5 Extended
    /dev/sda5 2554 19115 133034202 83 Linux
    /dev/sda6 19116 19457 2747083+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
    paddy@paddy-laptop:~$

i hope that helps, i think the data is corrupted but i can see it to format it

Re: USB HD is there but not mounting

hmm, i see you are trying to mount the whole disk. Mount can only mount individual partitions.

So try this, sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1 /media/Myfiles.When mounting, you must specify the disk and the partition number as shown by fdisk -l. Since sda seems to be the main system disk, I assume sdb is your external drive.

    Code:
ntfs-3g: Failed to access volume '/dev/sdb1': No such file or directory
Please type '/sbin/mount.ntfs-3g --help' for more information.
is the response i get from that

Re: USB HD is there but not mounting

Hmm, from what I gather, it seem as though your partition may be corrupt or missing. Is the disk plugged in and turned on? I didn't see a entry for your external hard drive when you posted the output of fdisk. Please posts the entire output of "sudo fdisk -l". Also, how big is this external disk of yours?

    the drive is 70g

and this is the full fdisk
    Code:
    paddy@paddy-laptop:~$ sudo fdisk -l
