If you want power management you need kernel .34, so get the latest version of that available?

The info' you need (for both the kernel, other packages & setting up power management) is in a how-to under "Ubuntu stuff:" way down the first post of this thread.

just updated my kernel on my laptop and I Can finally use the OSS drivers (without an insanely hot vid card)! Compiz with no tearing and no video tearing FTW.

you know.... Nvidia have been ceasing to cooperate with the OSS community and ATI are cooperating as much as possible.... the decision on which to buy right there is a no brainer atm. At least between those 2.

Yeah I regretted getting a laptop with an ati vid card for ages ebcause the linux drivers are so bad, but these OSS drivers are maturing so fast I am glad now. OSS drivers are awesome. Can always keep my kernel and xorg up to date and they are still compatible, and they work out of the box.

I got an ATI 1300 XT pro myself and 3 days after buying it....,. ATI ceased support of it..... needless to say I was really peeved and cussing badly.........

you know what though with how the card is handling since even karmic, I've had a lot better performance from it.... and with nvidia now.... I am very happy I did go ATI.... so I went from happy to cussing to super happy

Just upgraded to Lucid, with the proprietary driver it comes with and I'm very disappointed as my HD4870 got 3.5 degrees hotter /~42.5/ in idle and of course the fan went faster. Last time when I tried to install the .34 rc3 and then rc4 I got dependencies issues, maybe it's better to wait for some of the next releases.
Can this be the root of the problem:

I mean the kernel difference, not the GRUB bug.

Edit: Just saw the rc5 and 6 here:
    http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
I'll try later with them too

naww, that's was just for grub not detecting multi boot systems (it wouldn't add windows to the grub boot menu) it was fixed before release though...

@ttanev: Try the latest kernel .34 version & use xorg-edgers ppa, see the first post "Ubuntu stuff:" for how-to, if you need it?

voltage drop support is already implemented for most r1xx-r5xx chips that support it, but it's commented out until I have a chance to test/debug it more thoroughly.
So for r100-r500 laptop users, things could turn up soon (fingers crossed)

What is my mobility hd2600? r600?

And question, what kernel is better for ati power management, the rc6, or the drm-next?
