Can't we just have it as proprietary driver? Like many other hardware drivers in Ubuntu?
I got the driver running from the backport repos in Jaunty, will that not be available in Karmic anymore?
I have tried but can not enable the psb driver in Ubuntu Karmic (9.10 alpha).
But yes, if it works as a back port there is no problem. Otherwise we rely on people who maintain the ppa provide an updated driver for Karmic (9.10).
So there is a difference between "official" support (provided by Canonical), which is not possible as the driver is closed source, an availability via 3rd party options, such as a ppa or other 3rd party repos.
sorry, not Karmic, it's Jaunty I use and that's why I'm interested in knowing if that "trick" will still work with Karmic.

Thanks, that is a nice tip. I do not use gnome enough to know all it's rich features.
So is it only KDE that is out of luck ?
Hopefully a KDE master will weigh in.
the psb drivers from ubuntu-mobile (mentioned in the site I linked to above) do support 3d, I can get compiz-fusion running normally on my t91. You have to add psb to the whitelist in the compiz config file. It's not the best in performance I've ever seen, but its sure ok.
The only pain is that you have to manually add the driver source to the kernel after each release.
