compaq sr2030nx sound problem

i have this one compaq sr2030nx desktop that runs ubuntu flawlessly.
that is except for the integrated sound.
it still works however "headphone jack sense" just won't work waited multiple releases hoping that it will fix itself.

* How to fix?

* If not fixable does Kubuntu or other distro work with it?

found that kubuntu just might (and that's pushing it) work

by the way, i am making due in the mean time by using external speakers with headphone jacks

i just use my System 76 system (great systems)

Have you tried installing "linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic" as mentioned on Daniel Chen's blog? This seems to have fixed a lot of issues with HP/Compaq machines.
