    1. will i have to format my drive i have
Yes, when doing a re-install it is recommended to reformat the hard drive.

    2. can i upgrade rather than start all over with programs and setting and stuff
Yes, you should be able to upgrade

    3. if i can upgrade will it keep my programs
Yes if you upgrade, you will get newer versions of the programs you are running.

Most of what is available in the Ultimate addition is already available in the repositories, the only thing you will miss is the artwork.

When you upgrade all the programs you install will be upgraded to their newer versions but your settings will stay the same. regular ubuntu and ultimate are not different OSes. They just vary in the programs that are installed by default.

Re: have my eye on ubuntu ultimate edition 2.3

Ultimate Edition started off as Ubuntu Christmas Edition, and was made as a Christmas present for the Ubuntu community. The creator, TheeMahn, then created Ubuntu Ultimate 1.1. Ultimate Edition has more software pre-installed and ready for use even in the live CD/DVD environment than Ubuntu. Ubuntu Ultimate 1.2 was released shortly after 1.1 with even more new software. To answer the call of gamers, TheeMahn then built Ubuntu Ultimate Gamers Edition. On October 18, 2007, TheeMahn received an e-mail from Canonical asking that the use of the Ubuntu logo and name stop.

The reason was that Ubuntu Ultimate had become too different from Ubuntu and that continued use of the name and logo may damage the Ubuntu Project. Ubuntu Ultimate then became Ultimate Edition.

We are now up to 2.5 with 2.6 ( based off Lucid Lynx ) just a month away :cheer:

Ultimate Edition is growing. With more and more users finding the light, the support infrastructure needs to grow – and it has.
There is now a choice of 3 different international forums:

Ultimate Edition – We've got you covered. :great:

Ultimate Edition is like asking for a romantic kiss with the girl next door and being taken to a month long party at the Playboy Mansion. You ask for a few more applications a few more tweaks to get your Ubuntu running a little more smoothly and you get drowned in so much choice, you probably flounder for breath.

This is not necessary good or bad, but I'm sure some people will find the extreme opposite of Ultimate Edition to what the default Ubuntu offers a little frightening. And others will cherish it like rain in the desert.

The choice of included programs is simply phenomenal. The programs are selected with care and a good balance is maintained between different categories and different uses, allowing just about anyone a hefty sample of everything. If you're lazy and want everything served on a platter, Ultimate Edition is the right formula for you.

The price you will have to pay is the reduced performance, much increased system resource usage and occasional application crashes and incompatibilities, as it seems virtually impossible to orchestra this huge install base without glitches.

Overall, Ultimate Edition in an impressive, welcome project. Future versions will offer an even better, more streamlined integration of applications into the distro and seek to reduce the system resource consumption as much as possible.
