    mac holds on apple logo

this is not that much as a ubuntu question, more as a mac.

my mac recently freezes once i turn it on. it won't pass the mac logo once it boots. i tried to hold the shift key and cmd + s and almost everything and the computer doesn't react. i could even boot it from a CD/DVD.

    i have a G3 with 10.5.

any thoughts on what it could be or what else i can do in order to at least access my files?

    thanks in advance

    try to reset PRAM

    1. Shut down the computer.
    2.Turn on the computer.
    3. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
4.Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

    Cheers

thnx for your help, but it seems not to respond to to any of the boot commands. would that means that the OS is corrupt?

    If that's a G3, then you're *not* running Mac OS X 10.5.

Have you tried booting from the recovery CD or the hardware diagnostic CD that probably came with it?

Failing all else, a stock retail 10.4 CD will boot a G3 Mac. You could go into Disk Utility and use that to try and scan the disk for problems and do a repair.
Have you ever found something in the second-to-last place you looked?
If it seems like I am ignoring you, perhaps I am.

+1 checking drive for repairs is your best bet

Ok, it's a G4. Then get your Leopard DVD out, boot off of that, and use Disk Utility to check your HDD and see what it says.

Worst case, boot the machine up with the T key down. That'll put it into "Target Disk Mode". Then, via Firewire plug it into another Mac (preferably) or a Linux box that has support for HFS+, grab your data off of it, then nuke-n-pave it.
