Post Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty on External HDD

Hey, when i recently upgraded from Windows XP to Jaunty, my first attempt was to simply install ubuntu on my external HDD so I could continue to dual boot on my Dell XPS M140 Laptop. Well, the process was successful, but afterwards, I tried to boot XP off my internal HDD, and GRUB came up with an error message telling me that the XP disc image was corrupted. It doesn't really matter anymore, I just put ubuntu on my internal and made it my main OS, but why would installing Jaunty on my external corrupt the Operating System on my internal?

It shouldn't corrupt anything. It probably has to do with the boot order of USB and internal drives getting mixed up.
