Windows and Linux NAS router backup solution

    Hello,

I am computer literate but new-ish to networking and storage. I have the following:
    - 1x ******* PC & 1x Linux Ubuntu 9.04 PC
    - 1x external HDD that has been used to backup up a ******* PC and has valuable data

I would like to find a 802.11n router/nas option like this one: Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH, to ensure that I can backup both.

The questions that I am having a tough time answering are:
    - how do I find out what Filesystem my ubuntu system is using?
    - do I need to partition the external HDD?
    - are there tutorials that help explain how to do this (i have been googling for a week with no real result
    - are there other products that people have experience of that might be better?
    - what should I be looking for when shopping for router/NAS options?

Thank you in advance for any support.

Make sure the NAS does samba, mount your NAS somewhere, then backup using rsnapshot or similar.

It indeed does Samba but the thing is slow http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/30881/96/ for a NAS so beware. On the other hand, I bought a Dlink DIR-655 recently, if I had known Buffalo released this I would have went with this. It seems to be reliable and has better wireless range.
