using yahoo in Ubuntu 8.10

I'm a newbie. I have install Ubuntu 8.10, and I Opened Pidgin Messenger Management(Applications --> Internet --> Pidgin), add my Yahoo account, the Buddy List appeared and I enabled my Yahoo account, but it still keep status "Connecting..." for a long time and even now, it can not access Yahoo and I can not chat through Yahoo, so I can not contact with my friends.
Please help me to solve this problem.

I had the same problem, go to systems>administration>update manager. in that section you will a pridgin in the list. when i downloaded that version it fixed my problem.

I had to do this

fist before I could update Pidgin to the newest version but that was right after Yahoo IM stopped working with Pidgin so things may have changed but if just running update doesn't work check out that link
