Start by choosing a nick that you want to use. You can change your nick by doing '/nick NEWNICK'. Once you have a nick (that isn't already registered), you can register it by doing '/msg nickserv register <your-password> <your-email>'. You will be sent an email containing a command to run. You will want to copy the command from the email and paste it into your IRC client. This should complete your registration. You can hide your email by entering '/msg nickserv set hidemail on'. The rest of the steps in the FAQ explain how to group a secondary nick to your account and how to configure your IRC client to automatically identify. Those steps are not required, but they can be very useful.
