    smplayer crackles, mplayer does not.

While playing certain video files (xvid) smplayer crackles audio. The same file plays fine in mplayer (the command line player).

I find the audio quality better in mplayer in general. smplayer appears to artificially process the sound track in some way and it appears louder and adds noise in the process.

Does anyone know how to configure smplayer to use mplayer's sound configuration?

You can play with the option in Preferences -> General -> Audio. For instance if the "software volume" is enabled, try to disable it. Or change the audio driver.

Thanks... that helped. Much better now. And thanks for your mplayer/smplayer PPA too
