I'm sticking with my lovely ROX (although you chaps have all done a splendid job with your KDE-4.3 desktops )

Its running in a usable manner on a AAO with SSD, I mean every day usable not just "I'll put up with it for the extra shiny" ?

I ask because KDE isn't known to be the most nippy of DE's and I have an AAO 16GB SSD and I don't think I could face using anything heavier than Gnome on it.

It's as nippy as Gnome is for me, but then I run Compiz and Emerald on my Gnome, so even Gnome is pretty heavy. I would just try it and see. It's significantly better than KDE 4.2, which I couldn't run AT ALL on my little 8GB SSD with 512MB RAM. I boot into it occasionally now to have a play and see if I can tweak it to get it a little lighter, but it's difficult at the moment because I rely heavily on Conky in Gnome to tell me what's eating my processor/memory, and I can't get it to work properly in KDE!

Thanks for the reply, I have the model with 1gb ram so it bodes well that you are finding it usable on 512mb. If I can find some time I shall give it a try after backing up my existing SSD install.

And just to keep the thread on topic, here is my desktop with a new wallpaper... Everything else same as before (last shot is just a few pages back)

what's not working right? if it's the background, you have to set the wall with feh for conky to have a transparent bg.

I tried the feh patch, but I couldn't get it to work and didn't have the time to investigate. I will post something on another thread.

I'd love to mimic that look!

    Ekon2 icons
Window controls are from the Bruzd-Nodoka theme.
    Darklooks theme.
    Wallpaper: Big City Life http://www.zixpk.com/2008/02/big-city-life.html
    Compiz
You can replicate the conky setup using this link:
    http://www.quicktweaks.com/2008/09/2...buntu-desktop/

Xpad notes with black background so it blends in the background.
    Pidgin screenlet
Myriad Pro font (They're proprietary fonts...)

Thats about it. Its quite nice.

You might want to try Nitrogen if you have problems with Feh (at least as long as you are not strictly against having a graphical browser for switching between your wallpapers )
