I am no fan of UML and doing all that boring stuff, it regard it very rarely necessary to write myself more than a sheet of paper. But ok, sometimes you are ordered to do so, so here my advice.

Enterprise Architect is a good tool. Though not free software and purely windows.... so maybe out of reach for a student. but its the only one i use plus there are good explanations for the newbie.

    As for the book:
If you really need a book you can take a look at the book "Applying UML and Patterns" by Craig Larman, its ok.
But I highly recommend you getting used to learn from the net. if you are digging into software engineering you will need to be able to do it.

I don't do UML either so I can't comment on tools, but as for books, Head First Object Oriented Analysis and Design seems like a good book. I've read a couple other Head First books and they are easy to follow and not as dry as other programming books are.

Eclipse has a UML component these days and its free.

Check the download page at Eclipse.

And yes, the book mentioned above is good and has a very original and interesting way of describing the process in a easy way.

The tool is costly and out of my reach anyways thank you for your valuable suggestion.
    Thanks guys.

Can you please tell me why devs don't like UML.
My college professors explain everyday why we should UMLs,actors , use cases and other stuffs.

As far as the book is concerned I am really going to look at Head First one.
Any more help would be highly appreciated.
    Thank you once again.

I figured out why UML is hated by most of the devs.
I stumbled a nice blog which explained why everybody hates UML.

    I recommend Visual Paradigm.
    URL: http://www.visual-paradigm.com/product/vpuml/

    For UML: http://www.visual-paradigm.com/produ...os/umlsupport/
You can create: Class diagrams, Use case diagrams, State machine diagram, and many more.
...and it's really easy to use
