Extracting music from mp3s (for karaoke)

Does anyone know how to do this? A friend needs to extract the music from an mp3 without the vocals for some sort of karaoke event.

Not having used it I'm not sure about the Linux version, but the Windows version of Nero has a filter option to remove vocals from an audio file that you're about to write to audio CD. How well it works can depend on the particular recording you're using it on - Nero has a preview option that will let you check.

Thanks for the info! I think he's going to want to do it in windows anyway and I think I have a nero cd somewhere - one of those that comes with dvd drives . for future reference though, it would be nice to know if it can be done in linux.
