You can run Ubuntu directly from the CD to see how it works. Se the link below for more information on installing along windows. In any case, back up anything that you can't afford to loose.

In general, you won't be able to run Windows programs in ubuntu/linux. However, several windows programs run with "wine" (= Wine Is Not an Emulator). If I'm correctly informed, at least Photoshop should be OK.

Linux is totally different from Windows so there will be a steep learning curve. Prepare to unlearn how things are done and work in windows.
