motherboard does not boot from USB?

I have a Gigabyte M57SLI motherboard. The BIOS says it can boot from USB-FDD, USB-HDD, USB-DVD, but none of these boots from a Ubuntu USB key. I prepared the USB key using Ubuntu 9.04's built-in USB creator.
I tried resorting to using a USB boot CD but ran into difficulties with error messages during boot up. Curious if this problem has been encountered by others before?

Also can anyone recommend some motherboards that can boot from USB key as intended?

noticed others having similar problems with 9.04 even though 8.10 was working for them:

I haven't tried live USB 8.10 on this computer so I can't be completely sure it's a motherboard issue.
