I have installed IRAF on ubuntu 9.04, but for the life of me cannot get xdimsum to install.

I have not used either, and Im guessing you wont get a lot of responses on this topic expect from people who are looking for a long term relationship.

It sounds as if part 1 is ok, but part 2
the xdimsum install
can you define what you have done so far?

Are you getting any error logs or something you can share?
