Exclamation No /dev/pts directory on new install

Just installed a fresh copy of Jaunty on an Acer Aspire 5101 laptop.

The problem is the terminal and installation programs (Add/Remove, apt-get etc.) are not working. I get "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal" when trying to use the terminal.

The workarounds involve mounting /dev/pts, except after every boot, the directory is missing, so I must create it again.

    Any solutions?

Secondly, my laptop touchpad is not working, the buttons or the track area.
