lately firefox has been selecting text (like the SHIFT+ARROW way) as i type, so instead of typing www.google.com it would end up being m and it would be selected. it's been doing this in the URL bar and the search bar.
what is causing this?

What options do you have checked in advanced preferences?
I guess you could solve this deleting the file localstore.rdf from your profile. Back it up or just move it to be safe. If it this doesn't help, put it back on your profile

I have this issue on one of my computers as well. It ONLY happens after I unlock Ubuntu. And it is ALWAYS fixed by simply selecting another window and then select Firefox again. No clue.
You can always try with the latest version of Firefox (3.5) to see if it solves the problem.
